Sun Awareness Week

From Monday 12th to Sunday 18th May.

Sun Awareness Week is an annual campaign by the British Association of Dermatologists to raise awareness around sun protection and skin cancer. The campaign – from 12th to 18th May 2025 – provides advice on prevention as well as encouraging early detection.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the UK and rates of skin cancer are rising faster than any other cancer. It is now one of the biggest cancer killers among the 15-34 age group.

Protecting your skin when outside is the best way to prevent skin cancers, and you can do this by using sun protection. If you are going to be outside for 30 minutes or more, remember the 5s:

SLIP on clothing
SLOP on SPF 30+
SLAP on a wide brimmed hat
SLIDE on sunglasses
SEEK shade where possible

The Cancer Research UK video below outlines what sunburn is, how it can increase your risk of skin cancer and how to protect your skin against sunburn.

Visit the skin cancer page of the Harrogate Cancer Services website to read more about the most common types of skin cancer, who is at risk and how to protect yourself.

It is important to check your skin regularly, and if you notice any changes to your moles; any non-healing or growing lesions, to get these checked by your GP.

Remember: if in doubt, get it checked out!
