Urological cancer

Cancer of the urinary system

Any concerns/

It is important to notice changes in passing urine. Experiencing pain or blood in your urine or passing urine more or less frequently.

We investigate and treat a wide spectrum of urological cancers.

Diagnosing, testing and treating urological cancers

The tests needed to diagnose urological cancers will be undertaken at Harrogate District NHS Foundation Trust.

We give chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy and other types of treatment. We will provide you with important information on what to expect, how your treatment will be given, possible side effects and what to do if you feel unwell at any time during your course of treatment.

Please let us know if you if you require this information in another language or format.

The bladder is a hollow and muscular organ that collects and stores urine (pee).

Read more about bladder cancer and tests and treatments at the Macmillan Cancer Support website.

The kidneys are part of the urinary system. The kidneys filter the blood to remove excess water and waste products. These are then made into urine (pee).

Read more about kidney cancer and tests and treatments via the Macmillan Cancer Support website. They also publish a booklet, ‘Understanding kidney cancer‘.

Prostate cancer starts in the cells of the prostate. The prostate is a small gland that is just below the bladder and in front of the rectum (back passage).

Penile cancer (cancer of the penis) is rare. Almost all cancers of the penis are squamous cell cancers. Squamous cells are found in the skin. They cover the surface of most parts of the body.

Meet our Multidisciplinary Team

The urological cancer service is made up of a Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) who work together to diagnose urological cancer and to identify the best course of treatment for each patient.

We also work with the urology team based at Leeds Teaching Hospitals. The service incorporates both in-patient and out-patient facilities at Harrogate District Hospital, as well as outpatient services at health centres in Wetherby, Yeadon and Leeds.
