Raising awareness of breast cancer throughout October
October is recognised annually as Breast Cancer Awareness Month with healthcare organisations and charities raising awareness of breast cancer and its symptoms as well as sharing information about diagnosis and treatment. Around 55,000 women and 400 men are diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK every year. 1 in 7 women in the UK will develop breast cancer in their lifetime.
On a more positive note, there has been remarkable progress in breast cancer survival in the UK, with survival rates doubling over the last 50 years. This progress reflects greater use of screening to detect cancer earlier, advances in treatment and care, and and a greater focus on achieving faster diagnosis.
The breast cancer page on our website offers information about tests and treatment for breast cancer at Harrogate District Hospital as well as introducing the multi-disciplinary team who are responsible for the care of breast cancer patients within the Trust.
Further information about breast cancer can be found on the Macmillan Cancer Support and the Breast Cancer Now websites.
