Research into complementary therapy services published

Reflexology session

An article recently published in the European Journal of Integrative Medicine evaluated the healthcare offered by the Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Centre’s (SROMC) complementary therapy services and found a significant improvement in wellbeing scores among patients before and after using the service.

The research – by Dr Nicola Brough of the University of Warwick as part of her doctorate studies – reported on the implementation of the Warwick Holistic Health Questionnaire among patients using the SROMC’s complementary therapy services. The questionnaire – which has been developed using ‘gold standard’ research methods – posed 25 questions to cancer patients prior to starting their therapy and, again, once therapy had concluded. The questions covered wellbeing, pain and sleep amongst other topics.

Julie Crossman, Lead Complementary Therapist, worked closely with Dr Brough, navigating the challenges of Covid to conduct the research. The findings concluded that patients found a significant improvement in their wellbeing following their therapy.

Dr Brough’s findings were published on the ScienceDirect platform, used by over 15 million researchers worldwide. Publication led to speaking invitations at an international conference for Julie Crossman.
