One of our patients shared this moving account about Active Against Cancer and using the service during her cancer diagnosis and treatment:
Active Against Cancer has supported me through my treatment weekly since they started in 2019 following my diagnosis of breast cancer. My story would be so different without the team, they have helped me both physically & mentally and me and my family will be forever grateful to have them in our life! When I was originally referred to Kerry, she chatted and assessed me so that she could allocate the appropriate classes. I’ll be honest, at first I thought it wasn’t for me, but how wrong was I!! The support they gave and give me is invaluable. I’ve met lifelong friends too which is so important knowing you have friends who totally understand what you’re going through.
My story changed again in Nov 2021 when I was diagnosed as stage 4. Steve, Kerry, Emma and the team helped me get my head in the right zone. They know me so well. They have adapted exercises so that I always feel positive and never make me feel I’m that ill person with cancer, even if I attend after chemo and am yawning throughout. It’s so important to keep my body moving, even though it’s challenging. The classes make me laugh too!! Thank you will never be enough, this team is my comfort zone, it gives me routine and it makes me feel normal. Living with cancer can be very challenging and I certainly feel very lucky to live in the area where there is Active Against Cancer. I told them recently I’m going for the long service award and hopefully will live many years.
A huge thanks for all your care and attention – and generally wearing us out every week!
Thank you for your support throughout the year. Long may it continue. You are special!
I cannot express in words the difference you have made to me during and post my surgery. Thank you is just not big enough, but I do thank you from the bottom of my heart.
